Not every "pay access" product is the same. Six questions to tell true earned wage access apart from a loan in disguise.

As pay-access products spread, some look like earned wage access but work like credit. Before you offer one to your people, ask these questions.

  • Is the amount limited to wages already earned? If employees can draw more than they've worked for, it's credit.
  • Is there any interest or percentage-based charge over time? True EWA has none. A flat, clearly disclosed transaction fee is different from interest that grows.
  • Is there a credit check or approval decision? Access to earned wages shouldn't depend on a credit score.
  • Can the employee end up owing money? With EWA, withdrawals are simply netted off salary already due. There should be no debt left over.
  • Are there late fees or penalties? There is nothing to be late on, so there should be none.
  • Is it marketed with other credit products? Be cautious if the app pushes loans or buy-now-pay-later offers to your staff.

Why it matters to you

You're putting your name behind the benefit. If employees end up in debt through a product their employer introduced, that damages trust, which is the opposite of what a retention benefit should do.

GetPaid only ever gives access to wages already earned, with 0% interest and no credit checks. You decide whether the company or the employee pays the transaction fee.
